A few weeks ago, I sent out a Throwback Thursday email about the usefulness of libraries and asked for book recommendations. My cousin told me about the book The Choice: Embrace the Possible by Dr. Edith Eva Eger.
Last week, I received a huge compliment from a coworker. The gist of it was what I wrote on my blog provoked their thoughts, that my writing was raw, and they sensed true emotion in my words. Then we ended up talking for an hour about one of my latest blog posts.
Last week, I wrote about choosing to leave my job in search of a soul-nourishing sabbatical. This week, I will tell you something that I find to be an odd by-product steaming from that decision.
When I was a teenager, a girlfriend told me about some people who every few years would sell everything they owned and go travel the world. I thought the idea was so absurd. Having to start over with everything, what kind of job would hire you with all the gaps in your resume. It didn’t seem like a good way to live, not setting down roots.
Okay, okay. Look just hear me out on this one. If you look at the categories on my website they are like: Growth, Positivity, Inspiration… this might make it seem like I am a high-minded dude that really has his stuff together. But really… all people are multi-faceted, complex beings.
So bear with me on this one.
Recently, we were having a get-together with some family at our house. The adults were talking in the dining room while the kids played in one of the bedrooms. Then my son walks into the dining room, wearing one of my shirts, a pair of my shoes, and some sunglasses. Then he proceeded to make this weird voice pretending to be me.

I still stand by this statement but it was put to the test.
Today is my seven-year anniversary working for Home Zone Furniture. While I have loved all the places my career has taken me (maybe a few short-lived exceptions), Home Zone is tops.
Over the pandemic, some people started doing things like making sourdough, Tik-Tok challenges or learning to tie-dye. Other than playing with squirrels and reading, I can’t say I have any hobbies. I have heard Europeans don’t ask what you do for work, instead they ask what you do as a hobby.
And apparently, they would consider me pretty dull since I don’t have a hobby I am passionate about (spreadsheets are my hobby but also my work).
On TV, in the movies, and in a few relationships I have seen, it seemed there was a love/hate (or tolerate/hate) relationship with the spouse and the in-laws. The mother-in-law would talk trash about the son-in-law or the daughter-in-law couldn’t stand the mother-in-law or whatever the combination.
