I heard someone say once that they were the kid that when they got a new VCR pressed every button and figured out what they all did. That really resonated with me since I was that same kid.
It’s that love of finding out how things work that led me to learn about computers as a kid, to my time in 3D modeling and animation, and my current career.
When I was young, I lived with my grandparents in a rural town’s municipal airport. It seems incredibly interesting to me now, we had miles of nature to explore around us as well as an airplane hanger full of all kinds of tools and gadgets, spare parts and junk. Oh, and a pool table.

Lately, we have been playing a lot of games. Skip-Bo, Uno Flip, Phase 10, Spades. For Christmas, I was given a Connect 4 type game which is my all-time favorite. During Christmas with my in-laws, I played my niece in Connect 4 and she was pretty good. Usually, when my nephew comes over we immediately whip out the game and start playing.
Yesterday I played the lottery for the third time in my life.
Early in the morning, my coworker told me that the jackpot had risen to some all-time high and he was thinking that we would buy some tickets and split the winnings. We joked about it for a while then became more and more serious. We would each get ten bucks worth and later it rose to twenty. Then I started asking what he would do when he won and started thinking about winning myself. Really visualizing how my life would change.
Here is a story. Maybe a parable that you can use in your life.
So as many of you know Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain came out this Tuesday. I mentioned that I preordered the game and on Monday received a tracking code letting me know that it had been shipped.
Many times when you first get a tracking code it was generated by the company and not in the UPS system. Knowing this I waited patiently from the time I got the tracking code all the way to five minutes after I got the tracking code. From then on I checked every hour or so to know the progress of my preorder. When will I get that hot little game in my hot little hands?
Forgive me, readers, for I have sinned. It has been a while since I last blogged.
Where do I start? My son and I both celebrated our birthdays, I read a ton of books, went to several Central Market cooking classes. I learned to make pizza, pasta, and croissants, respectively.
I lost some weight and then gained most of it back (with help from the cooking classes).
Recently, I listened to a podcast of Tim Ferriss interviewing Tony Robbins. In it, Tony mentioned something like “Change your life from one of expectation to appreciation.”
Most of your reality is based on how you perceive it. I’m sure everyone knows about the glass half full or half empty. It’s the same either way but it depends on you to decide how you see it.
My mom offered to watch our son so my wife and I went on a date for the first time in what felt like forever.
We had planned on taking a painting class but when it came to it we needed to unwind and both thought to watch a movie instead. After the movie though I said, “Let’s keep it going!” and we hit up The Olive Garden. At this point, it is 10 o’clock and I said, “Let’s keep it going!” again. I had no desire to go back home.
One thing we had always wondered was if we could go to the 24-hour King Spa and spend the night. So we headed over.
Okay, just a few random things this week. You can find the common thread (if any).
First, I have heard from some people around me that are in the dating scene. Every time I hear about their issues I keep thinking “Oh man, they could be having so much fun. If (God forbid) I was ever in that situation again, it would be so easy to make the most of things and just have fun and play it cool. When someone special came along start being exclusive but never let go of the fun part.
Last week my wife and I watched Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story. Bruce had come to this country and felt out of place and rejected by American society. We then talked about our own childhood experiences of rejection and how we dealt with them in different ways.
