Ménage à Trois

I should start by saying my grandpa is someone I have looked up to since I was just a little lad. Not just literally. At 84 years old he can still hold himself horizontal on a pole. He is a larger life figure who has a life full of adventure.

We were in a waiting room today and there was footage of an elephant rampage going on in India on the TV. I asked if he had ever ridden an elephant. He told me that he rode an elephant, a camel, a Brahma bull… he even rode a horse when another horse tried to have sex with it?

A Message from the Cloud

This morning, I woke up to the sound of rain. Coming from Texas where it seems to rain two weeks out of the year, I have always loved the sound. It symbolizes life and renewal.

After the rain, a mist rolled in and now I am writing to you from inside a cloud.

I’ve Been to the Promised Land…

We have been in Costa Rica for a week and while it is amazing, I have to fight to take the time to do my day job. Between my family wanting my time and being distracted by the surroundings (both great problems to have) work is a challenge. I slacked a little during the week and had to make up hours on the weekend. I tend to get a little stressed out about it but then realize that I am in paradise and essentially life is amazing.

OMG I Love the Internet

So here I am in Costa Rica. I had to work all day but I was on a hammock on a balcony with my wife and son and a flock of hummingbirds.

At one point a small toucan landed 3 feet away from me and we just stared at each other for a little bit.

This amazing opportunity would not have been possible without my boss, the owner of the coolest company in existence, but I have to kick a special shout out to the internet! Without the internet, most of the coolest things in your life would not be possible.

Leavin’… on a Jet Plane

By this time next week, I will be living the high life in Costa Rica. Literally.

Rancho Naturalista has an elevation of between 2528 and 3850 feet according to the website and I am currently around 587 feet. Might as well be in space.

My Favorite Holiday

I am sure you could ask any child and they would tell you Christmas is their favorite holiday. As you grow up you might like Halloween and Easter. When you are older still you might get into some of the drinking holidays we have adopted from other cultures (Cinco de Mayo and Saint Patrick Day) but for me, the best holiday is April Fools Day.

Back to Base

Recently, I listened to a podcast of Tim Ferriss interviewing Tony Robbins. In it, Tony mentioned something like “Change your life from one of expectation to appreciation.”

Most of your reality is based on how you perceive it. I’m sure everyone knows about the glass half full or half empty. It’s the same either way but it depends on you to decide how you see it.

Date Night/Late Night

My mom offered to watch our son so my wife and I went on a date for the first time in what felt like forever.

We had planned on taking a painting class but when it came to it we needed to unwind and both thought to watch a movie instead. After the movie though I said, “Let’s keep it going!” and we hit up The Olive Garden. At this point, it is 10 o’clock and I said, “Let’s keep it going!” again. I had no desire to go back home.

One thing we had always wondered was if we could go to the 24-hour King Spa and spend the night. So we headed over.

Go Forth and Wreak Havoc

Last year around this time I wrote a post about being stuck in a rut. Even though the person I was talking about in that post really was someone else, I remembered feeling the same way. Writing that was as much for me as it was them.

Lately, I have been feeling this so I imagine this is a seasonal thing. The weather is gloomy, I haven’t received enough vitamin D; whatever it is… life just feels a little blah. I was getting kind of down thinking about how things seem so repetitive lately. I can’t really tell you about anything that happened last week. Life is meant to be so much more.

But Honestly…

“Let me be honest with you…”

The worst way to start a sentence. It always irks me to hear this.

What it presupposes is that all previous conversations were a stack of lies.

“The truth is like a lion; you don’t have to defend it. Let it loose; it will defend itself.”

Augustine of Hippo

It is totally okay to say “Let me be completely transparent with you.” Depending on the relationship of the two parties conversing or perhaps in consideration of someone else’s time you might only give a snippet of the full story. Totally understandable.
